Two hours in October prevents most winter calls.
Clean and inspect the gutters
After most leaves are down — usually the first week of November. Flush downspouts with a garden hose and check the discharge runs at least six feet from the foundation.
Trim overhanging branches
Especially branches within 4 feet of the roof. Squirrels, raccoons, and ice damage all travel on overhanging limbs.
Walk the attic
Look for daylight at any roof penetration. Look for stains on the deck or rafters. Insulation depth — if you can see the joists, you have less than 12 inches and you should plan a winter top-up.
Check the chimney
Cap intact? Crown not cracked? Flashing tight against the mortar with no visible separation? Caulk is not flashing — if you see only caulk, schedule an inspection.
Schedule any pending work
Asphalt installs work best at 45°F-plus. The window closes in mid-November. After mid-November we are doing emergency and winter-spec work only. Plan accordingly.
